Finding the Best Kindle Cover

Okay, you have finally decided which ebook reader or tablet to buy, now the tough decision about which Kindle Cover to choose has begun. There are hundreds of different types available at prices from a few dollars to a hundred dollars, but which one is right for you?

Since the release of the Kindle 3 there has been a surge in new funky Kindle 3 covers such as slip sleeves in neoprene from Built. These are beautiful, bright, a bit brash but have a perfect fit to keep your new Kindle safe from harm.

Now that we also have the choice of a smaller Kindle 4, Kindle Touch and the Kindle Fire Tablet, there will continue to be an ever growing number of cases and covers made available for us.

Just make sure that you double check the cover you want will fit! Kindle 4 covers will usually also fit the touch-screen Kindle, but Kindle Keyboard covers are unlikely to fit the other too. And, if you're lucky enough to get your hands on the Kindle Fire tablet you'll want something designed for that in particular too!

You might just stick with the original Amazon leather Kindle cover. You would think after all, that it might be the best choice since the makers of the Kindle itself provide it. At around $30 it is a reasonable choice and hugely popular. A reasonably solid leather Kindle Case it offers a unique (patent pending) clipped hinge mechanism that keeps the reader held securely in place. Over 2400 customers have already written reviews at overall it has been awarded 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars by them.

Is it the best though? Maybe... But there is a lot more choice available and some great solutions to keeping your portable reader out of harms way, without hiding it under a mediocre package of cheap leather.

The current favorite contenders for the Best Kindle Cover are the M-Edge Go!, the Tuff Luv Leather Kindle covers and the beautiful, luxurious Cole Haan Leather covers. To be honest we prefer leather for all Kindle protection and you can see more about the Best Leather Kindle Covers in our other article.

Read on to find a little more about each and help pick the best leather cover for you favorite handheld Ebook reader. Whether you are looking for a traditional, stylish case or something a little more daring, such as amazon's own Hot Pink Leather Kindle Cover, we are sure there will be one to suit.

We suggest you buy from amazon as they simply cannot be beaten for both price and choice on a huge range of Kindle Cases, Jackets and covers. In fact if you a handheld ebook reader other than the Kindle (gasp!) they can help you out too with a massive range to help protect and personalise just about every e-reader under the sun!

Each type of case has its advantages, some are super padded and really designed to help out the most clumsy gadget fan, whilst others are sleek, lightweight and better suited to those that can keep their Kindle in safe hands at all times!

Before we take a look at the three best Kindle Covers though, we have a short interlude to bring you the Best Kindle 3 Cover today...

Kindle 3 Covers

Now that the Kindle 3 has finally been released (well for pre-order anyway - deliveries start 27 Aug 2010), we can expect to seem some nifty new Kindle 3 Covers in the works.

First of the mark, unsurprisingly are amazon themselves with two new leather Kindle covers. Both come in seven colors (black, brown, orange, red, blue, green and pink). Both are leather on the outside and have a microfiber grey interior that is great for keeping dust and scratches away from your beautiful new eBook reader.

Both are ultra slim and lightweight so are great for keeping the new smaller sized Kindle protected without spoiling your enjoyment of actually reading your device.

The first is priced at a little under $35 whilst the other is just under $60. The reason for the big price difference is that one is a Kindle 3 Cover with Book Light. And, this isn't any old book-light either. Through the ingenious design of the hinge system that keeps the Kindle 3 in place, a small current is passed directly from the reader to the reading light. The up-shot is you need no batteries to power the book-light - fantastic news! And no wonder the lighted Kindle covers are proving so popular.

And now, back to our original article about the Best Kindle Covers around...

M-Edge Go! Kindle Jackets

In the same price range as the original amazon version is the far more interesting M-Edge Go! Kindle Jacket. This is a similar product. Leather exterior, soft suede lining, lightweight and easy to use. The M-Edge Go Kindle Cover offers a similar secure locking hinge system to keep the reader in place. In addition elastic straps keep the other side of the reading device snug too.

The M-Edge Go! (daft name aside) is a definite improvement on the amazon own model. Not least because it comes in a wide range of colors and finishes. Who can resist purple pebbled leather? Mmm, maybe that's just me, but you know what I mean.

Because it is a bit more 'fun' and younger in design this leather Kindle case also makes the reading device look better dressed and less like an expensive gadget. You could be holding anything in there - a personal planner or diary, not necessarily a $259 piece of electronic hardware.

For me, the only draw back with the M-Edge Go Case is that it does not fasten shut. This of course is partly why it is so lightweight and thin, all reasons why it makes the reader easy to use whilst in its jacket. But as a woman with far too much debris in her handbag I just don't find this option gives enough protection. To stop anything gettting inside the cover and scratching my precious reader I need something that closes tightly.

But if you want something reasonably hard wearing that looks good and is super light to make reading your Kindle more like it is without any protection the M-Edge Go! is certainly one of the better choices. A wide range of colors and a reasonable price tag make this one a good gift idea too for those that do not fear dropping their reader but would just like it to look a little more fun whilst not getting scratched.

Please note M-Edge GO! Kindle 3 Covers are no longer leather, but are instead a tough microfiber leather-like material - still hard-wearing but not exactly the same. On a more positive note they have far more colors available than ever before for the latest generation Kindle so things are still good!  Also they have moved away from the hinge system and use instead a four point mounting system to hold the device in place.  This might not be quite so secure if you fancy throwing your gadget around, but it does make it easier to get the device in and out quickly.

Tuff Luv Kindle Covers

The king of Leather Kindle Covers for me though is the Tuff Luv range. They are still reasonably low in price but are made of much tougher stuff. A lifetime warranty and hand-stitching give the game away really, these are Kindle Cases of Quality. But they still have a sprightly step, with innovative designs and a few cool funky colors available.

The two key designs are the book style jacket or the flip stand. Both are larger and offer much more protection than the leather jackets mentioned above. They close properly so keeping all the debris in my purse away from my reading device. And, this is why for some, they just will not be the best Kindle covers around. They are more bulky and not ideal for those that want to keep their ebook reading experience light and breezy.

For me though, the safety they offer and their high quality without a high price tag makes them far more superior to the alternatives.

My personal Best Kindle Cover is the Tuff Luv Kindle 2 Book Style cover. It is reasonably lightweight but boy is it protective of its little reader inside. I know the flip stand styles sell more. They are fab if you like reading at a lectern, but for me they are unnecessary, I just want something to keep my reader safe and allow me to read, holding it open in my hand whilst out and about. Plus of course, it looks vaguely like a filofax and who could forget the pride of their first filofax of the 80's?

Luxury Leather Kindle Cases

If you do not have such budget restraints as myself, please do consider some of the more exclusive leather Kindle Cases available. The finish with the Cole Haan Hand-Stained Pebble Grain Leather Kindle Covers has to be seen to be believed, and trust me once you have had a feel of the ultra soft leather the chances are nothing else will compare.

The best bit about these luxury leather Kindle Cases is that they are so soft it makes reading an electronic device feel so much more like reading a worn and loved tattered old paper back.

The offer a similar Kindle compatible hinge clip system as the original amazon case above, and no they do not fasten securely as I said I needed (and why my choice for Best Kindle Cover is the Tuff Luv). But if you can afford one of these goat skin lined little beauties you probably do not have so much rubbish in your bag and so will not have my unnatural fear of spoiling my lovely new Kindle 2!

I can only dream...

If you are more of a responsible adult than myself please enjoy your über luxury leather Kindle Case, treat it well and enjoy the more traditional feel of reading your great little Kindle Ebook Reader!

Best Kindle Covers

So you've seen my pick of the Best Kindle Covers. I have to say I do like some of the slightly more unusual products out there too. And, being a fan of colorful items you might think I'd drool over all those bright and breezy Kindle Skins in silicon and gel.

But, though I am always drawn too their pretty designs I find it impossible to read when the display is surrounded by so much color and ornament. Personally I really don't think you can do any better than a white, black, clear or perhaps a pale pink Kindle Skin. I prefer aKindle 3 Sleeve so that i can read the Kindle naked so it stays light in my hands.

It is always the ability to use your Kindle that must be top priority when choosing any Kindle Covers or Cases.

Sending a Kindle to my son in Afghanistan. What would be the best cover to use for protection for his Kindle?

It depends if he will want the cover to stay on all the time. The M-Edge leisure is probably the best for protection against sand as it has a clear vinyl front cover that can protect the device all the time.

If he doesn't want anything on it when reading, something like the Built or Belkin Kindle Sleeves would work well.

do you have lighted kindle cover for a second generation kindle, not the newest version?

Janie, there is no cover with an integrated light for the kindle 2. But you can buy a reading light that clips onto the Kindle itself or many of the covers (m-edge or the amazon own covers have compatible reading lights). Just click the link at the top and then search for Kindle 2 covers.

Jason, you actually can have one special made at a reasonable price from etsy to cover your cover. : ) I know that puppydogsnpolkadots.etsy.com and many others make them to fit your request.
