Lighted Kindle 3 Cover Reviews

Well, I've had time now to get to know the Kindle 3 and my new Lighted Kindle 3 Cover so it is time for serious long hard look at this innovative little case.

First up – what do you get.

  • Well, a good quality leather exterior in a range of seven glorious colors (I went for Apple Green because it is bright enough that I simply cannot lose my Kindle no matter where I put it down).
  • The leather is not exactly luxury quality, but it is a heap better than those cheap leather covers you see so often. The stitching is good and the overall build quality makes me think this cover is gonna last as long as my eBook Reader if not a whole lot longer!
  • The interior is tasteful suede-microfiber in gray. It matches my graphite Kindle pretty well, but more importantly it is soft and should keep my display scratch free (I know I could go for a transparent screen protector too, but I can never get the things stuck down flat enough and prefer the look of the Kindle 3 without one.
  • Inside the Kindle fits onto gold plated hinges in the center spine. These catch hold of the holes on the left hand edge of the device and keep it perfectly in place for the long haul. They are a bit more hassle than a slide in cover, but give far more security – there is no way that Kindle is going to move!
  • Inside the top right hand corner of the back cover is a slim-line LED reading light. It slides down inside the cover when it's not being used, so the only way you know it is there is by a little plastic edge on the back corner. Great as I don't need to pack a light as an extra item in my purse. When I need the light, it simply slides up and illuminates the screen for me. No batteries needed as the book-light gets all the power it needs from the Kindle 3 via those current conducting gold-plated hinges. Cool huh?
  • On the outside there is a color coded strap that holds the leather Kindle cover firmly shut when I'm not reading.

So that's what you get with the Kindle 3 lighted cover, but is it really any good?  Is it indeed one of the Best Kindle 3 Covers around?

Lighted Kindle Cover Review

Well, okay my first impressions were that the color was a little less bright than it looked on the amazon site. But in hindsight that is probably a good thing, as it is a little more tasteful than anticipated.

  • I love the book-light. Not having to worry about batteries is a fantastic idea. True it does mean the Kindle loses its charge a little faster than it would do. But with wifi turned off that battery is still lasting longer than I could have hoped for so no worries there.
  • What about the light? Well, you do have an LED light and these are more directional than a traditional bulb. What that means is that the top right hand corner of the display is lit more than the lower left hand one. Obvious really since the light is positioned at the top right hand side. The difference in light is not a problem for me personally. The brightest part of the display is not glaring and the dullest part is still easy to read – even with my tired eyes in bed.

So the verdict – while not cheap, the lighted cover for the Kindle 3 is a great idea very well executed. If it didn't exist I would have gone for a similar leather cover with the addition of a clip on book-light that I would have forgotten to charge, and would have been annoyed with having to find somewhere to store when not being used.

So overall I am most definitely a fan of the amazon lighted Kindle 3 covers.

Colorful leather Kindle 3 Covers

The only real problem I found with these leather Kindle covers was deciding which color to choose. So if you are having as indecisive a time as I here is my fun guide to Kindle cover colors:

  • Black Leather Kindle Covers.  These are for the traditionalists out there. Plus any Goths, or fans of 60's two-tone.
  • Chocolate Brown Kindle Covers.  For the chocaholics and the fashion conscious – isn't brown nearly always the new black? If you where brown boots you need a brown Kindle cover.
  • Apple Green Kindle Covers.  For those who don't want to lose their Kindle, plus any leather loving Eco friendly sorts out there – this is most definitely a green eBook Reader cover!
  • Steel Blue Kindle Covers.  These ones are for those with their heads in the clouds, this is sky blue not steel blue as far as I can tell.
  • Hot Pink Kindle Covers.  Could be for girls – but seriously this is not a baby pink case for the faint hearted. This is a screaming pink case for sassy girls with attitude.
  • Burnt Orange Kindle Covers.  Feel like a would-be pyromanica? Go on then, get the burnt orange cover – it is definitely autumnal so great for September-November purchases.
  • Burgundy Red Kindle Covers.  My gran may have said “red shoes, no knickers” but she was wrong. Sometimes red leather shoes are all a girl wants to wear, and co-ordinating her Kindle 3 makes perfect sense!

There you go, a beginners guide to choosing the right color lighted Kindle 3 cover.
