Tough iPad Cases from Otterbox

Otterbox are renowned for building tough cases for all manner of electronic items, both big and small.

Their latest range of products offer the iPad that same tried and tested formula for ensuring your favorite tablet keeps on working, no matter where you take it.

Three levels of protection keep the tablet protected from just about anything. True in theory these little beauties are not waterproof. But check out customer reviews and you will see that though don't won't guarantee protection in the deep they will keep your new iPad from harm even during the occasional drop into a puddle!

Shock is dissipated away from your tablet so any knocks should not cause a problem. Thick bumpers all the way around will keep even the prescious display free from harm too.

Otterbox Defender Series Cases for iPad

First up we have the super tough Otterbox Defender Series. These iPad Cases are for really tough jobs. If you like to take your iPad onto building sites on a regular basis this is the case to choose!

So what do you get with your Defender iPad Case? Well, its a three layer approach to protecting your Apple Tablet.

  1. First up a high quality screen protector to keep scratches away from the display. True this is hardly innovative and probably something you would consider getting no matter what case you bought for your iPad. Still, this is an important first layer of protection.
  2. Secondly the tough bit. A polycarbonate shell. This fits around the body of your iPad, armouring it. Now this stuff is really really tough and surprisingly light considering just how difficult it is to break (in fact armoured or bullet proof glass is often made of the stuff).
  3. Finally we get to the bit you see. A soft silicone shell covers all that armour plating. Providing you with a soft rubberised, easy to grip case for your iPad. Silicone plugs cover all the ports and provide a great grip at the base of the tablet.

So we know this is a strong iPad case. We also know it is now pretty cheap (if you avoid the Otterbox site and go to amazon!). But is it practical?Well it depends on whether you need all that burly protection really. The Defender iPad Case does add quite a lot of extra bulk and weight to the tablet, and of course that might mean it simply isn't practical for you. There is a stand built into the back which is handy for viewing your iPad at a desk or table.

But if you do go to "dangerous" places where your iPad is likely to be at risk (or indeed if your toddler is particularly fond of throwing your iPad across the room) then it is certainly worth the money. The case has a snap of back section that can be snapped onto the front to give all that armour plating to the display when you aren't using the device. Plus a snap off section allows you to use the docking station with the Defender case on.

Otterbox Commuter Series for iPad

If the Defender is just a little too bulky for your needs check out the Otterbox Commuter iPad Case.  This takes the general principles contained the Defender but cuts the bulk.  Otterbox have reduced the volume of polycarbonate shell protecting the iPad itself.  All the key areas are still covered of course, but this is a more practical approach for those who are not visiting war zones quite so regularly.

In fact, this is exactly what it is called - a great iPad case for commuters.  Sure it will survive knocks, bumps and the odd drop but to a slightly lesser degree than its bigger heavier brother.

After applying a transparent film to cover the display a silicone layer is applied.  This cushions the iPad and gives additional bumper protection in the corners.  It also covers all controls (a flap in the silicone lets you get and the head-phone jack).

Once that's done a polycarbonate shell fits over the top, offering great protection and a good feel for holding the device.  The Commuter series offers a far more light-weight and thinner design so makes using the iPad a whole lot more comfortable.  This is far more like traditional snap on covers in looks, but way stronger due to its design.

If you want to protect your iPad pretty seriously, without making it too heavy to handle the Otterbox Commuter iPad Case is the one to choose!

Tough iPad Cases from Otterbox

Both the Otterbox Commuter and Defender series offer some awesome tough protection. Not for everyone though and it really depends on just how clumsy you are or how dangerous your average day is, as to whether you really need one of these tough iPad cases.

But for peace of mind such "over the top" protection really cannot be beaten, especially when you take into account just how expensive your great new iPad was in the first place!

But Otterbox aren't the only ones making such hard-core protective iPad Covers, check out too the ranges from Speck, Hard Candy and Cool Bananas (their BulletProof hard cover is wicked!

And, if you want a little more protection don't forget to add a waterproof iPad bag to your new tough iPad case order - for those days at sea!
